Estero Custom Pool with Raised Waterfall Planters and Midnight Blue Finish
Completed in 2018, this Estero project features a 28 by 30 foot pool, a 6 foot interior diameter spa raised 18 inches, two raised planters with 3 foot sheer descent waterfalls, and a large deck that extends approximately 42 feet 6 inches by 62 feet 6 inches with an additional 19 foot 6 inch section. Tremron Templehurst pavers in Sierra, a Stonescapes Midnight Blue pebble finish, and a 7 by 9 foot sun shelf with Pentair LED bubblers complete the design.
The proportions make this project different from a typical narrow rectangular pool. At 28 feet wide, the water has a broad presence within the backyard, and the surrounding deck gives that width enough space to feel intentional rather than oversized.
Designing a Broad Pool for a Large Outdoor Area
The near square 28 by 30 foot footprint changes how the pool is experienced. Instead of emphasizing one long swimming lane, the design creates a wide central body of water with room for the raised spa, sun shelf, and waterfall features to be distributed across the composition.
The large deck supports that scale. With a deck footprint extending more than 60 feet in one direction, there is space for furniture, circulation, and outdoor living without crowding the pool edge.
The raised spa and planters create vertical points within an otherwise broad, low layout. That contrast helps organize the view and keeps the wider pool from feeling visually flat.
Materials and Features
Raised waterfall planters: Planters raised 12 inches incorporate 3 foot sheer descent waterfalls, combining landscape space with a controlled sheet of water into the pool.
Raised spa: The 6 foot interior diameter spa is elevated 18 inches, making it one of the main focal points and adding another water level to the wider pool layout.
Tremron Templehurst pavers: Templehurst pavers in Sierra cover the expansive deck, providing a warm, consistent hardscape across a large outdoor living area.
Midnight Blue Stonescapes: The darker Midnight Blue pebble finish creates a deeper water color and gives the broad surface of the pool a strong visual presence.
Large sun shelf: At 7 by 9 feet, the sun shelf is large enough to function as a distinct shallow water zone rather than a small entry ledge.
Pentair LED bubblers: LED bubblers animate the sun shelf and add evening color without taking attention away from the larger sheer descent waterfalls.
Two pump system: A two pump system supports the spa and water features while giving the project the circulation capacity needed for its scale.
The Finished Estero Pool
The completed backyard feels substantial because the pool, deck, and water features were all designed at a similar scale. The broad pool would feel very different with a narrow perimeter deck, just as the large deck would feel underused around a much smaller body of water.
The raised spa and waterfall planters break up the width, while the Midnight Blue finish gives the water depth against the warmer Sierra pavers. The sun shelf adds a separate way to use the pool without interrupting the main swimming area.
For us, this project demonstrates the importance of proportion on larger outdoor spaces. More square footage does not automatically create a better backyard. The pool and deck still need to relate to one another in a deliberate way.
